The “Ancient Coiner” Plaquette.

The above “plaquette-type” medal was struck circa 1903 in France . It is in antiqued bronze, 100 x 87.5 mm. The designer/engraver was Ovide Yencesse and the piece was struck by Arthus Bertrand, Paris . It is believed that their actual issuer was the Société des Amis de la Médaille. All were serial-numbered with at least 200 struck.

The obverse shows an “ancient coiner” with the Greek inscription ??G???????S (ARGYROKO?OS = ancient coiner) arranged vertically in front of him. The reverse shows an ancient dekadrachm from Syracuse with a branch of laurel below. The lower half of the medal is left blank, presumably so they could be suitably inscribed if so desired.
