MICCy Speaks:

IN MEMORIAM

It is with the deepest regret that we note the passing of our fellow club member, Bill Helen. Bill was one of our earliest members, holding MICC #5. A quiet man with his shoulder to the wheel, Bill served the last half of 2003 as our vice-president and the first half of 2004 as treasurer at which time he was forced to relinquish the post due to illness. He will be greatly missed.

With the return of more benign weather, the turnout at the April meeting was somewhat better with a total of 31 members and guests in attendance. We were especially happy to note that the entire executive of the Alberni Valley Coin Club was here - and not for the first time.

Along with other reports, we were treated to a brief talk at the April meeting by member Tolling Jennings on the Lasqueti Mint (with samples of the products in attendance). Our local mintmaster is becoming famous. Coverage in the April MICC Numismatic Journal was only one; both the December 2006 and February 2007 numbers of The Shoreline , publication of the North Shore Numismatic Society (North Vancouver), carried writeups of Lasqueti Mint issues for Salt Spring Island and Lasqueti Island. These were further reported in the CNJ 's "News from the Clubs". Good on ya, cobber.

And, as a matter of record, Wayne Jacobs spun us a tale of a German unissued emergency note from the closing days of WWII.

We also broke an auction record with the number of lots, additions coming in after the list had been published. (This month, we may have a new record set!)

We will mention again: our annual barbecue will be held at the Parksville Family Park on Sunday, July 15 between 1:00 and 6:00 p.m. This, unfortunately, coincides with the tail end of another national event, the C.N.A. Convention in Niagara Falls (full particulars are promised for the May C. N. Journal ). You can make both; there is, after all a time difference of three zones.

Wayne Jacobs is numismatic expert. He is the award winning author of numerous articles. He is the secretary and editor of the "Mid-Island Coin Club Numismatic Journal"of Nanaimo, Vancouver Island , British Columbia.
