The October meeting of the MICC was attended by 25 members. Prior to the meeting was another by the executive and for the record, the following were brought forward and mentioned: (a) it was decided that MICC would not participate in the Victoria Numismatic Society medal project except as customers and, (b) that the Journal for the time being would continue to be produced in the same way. It was felt that the delegation of different functions would only mean that with more links went the possibility of more things going awry.
Even so, Joan R. proposed that an inter-club e-mail "clearing house" be set up in order that on-line members be quickly notified of any fast-breaking club news. Further, that since e-mail is becoming nearly universal, that for the future the club consider making at least some of the Journal mailing in electronic format (for those who wish it so). This in light of the fact that we have seen costs for our "hard copy" rise dramatically in 2007 - and are entirely positive that postage rates will continue to increase.
In keeping with MICC's policy of attempting to allocate our charity dollars where there seems to be the most need and greatest bang-for-the-buck, our annual December charity auction and Christmas party will be in support of the Nanaimo 7-10 Club this year. This volunteer group, who serve meals and bagged lunches to those in need - no questions asked - were evicted in September from their current premises and have been since operating from the back of a truck. New premises have been temporarily found, but only until February 23. After that ....??? In the meantime, the cupboard is dangerously bare.
October speaker for the evening was Hans Boerger, curator of the Parksville Museum , who gave a talk on a number of interesting artifacts, including one of the only snowshoes for horses in captivity. Slated for November is Peter Hoffman who will speak on ancient coins. As well, I am informed that Tolling Jennings, Master of the Lasqueti Mint, will be on hand, hopefully with a display of Mint wares as well.
Should be a good one.
