The March meeting was attended by 34 members and guests, including contingents from Victoria and Alberni. The above number was by head count, (taken over and over again) but with only 30 signing the guest book. Puh-leeze , make yer mark. Someday that book may be auctioned at Sotheby's just because it is filled with the autographs of the rich and famous. Or maybe just because we'd like it complete The educational program was a talk on Newfoundland coins and currency. We'd like to thank George (last name withheld) and commend him and Jeff on their foresight in housing the display in a glass case. In this way, the drool failed to harm the notes and coins within and was easily removed. In keeping with the evident interest in Newfoundland material, this issue contains an article of the Treasury Notes of 1920. Also included are a couple of guest articles, one from the Vancouver Numismatic Society News Bulletin – which in turn appeared in slightly different form in the C.N.J. – and another the result of a submission by one of our own members from a Vancouver newspaper. As a change of pace, we are scheduling for the April meeting a video entitled “Making Ancient Coin Collecting Fun” (33 min.) Now you can find out who invented the toilet – things like that. For May, we are pretty much assured of the instructional services of Ron Greene, FCNRS, from Victoria. More details next month. Our meeting closed with the usual raucous auction – and I gotta talk about that. We received a couple of complaints from would-be bidders who found it hard to hear due to a number of conversations/meetings going on at the same time. Unfortunately, the auctioneer is ramped up close to the threshold where the A.B.C. might become unhappy. So we might try a little more dekorum (yes, it's strange to me, too). Get your suntan lotion warmed up: the Great Mid-Island Barbecue will be held July 23, 1-6 p.m. at the Parksville Community Center grounds – as it has been for the past two years. Plan to attend. Bring Granny and the kids; whoever.
M.I.C.C. Member #001. Any local collector who doesn't know Jeff and Joan's store in Rutherford Mall has probably been a coma. But for those who don't, Nanaimo S&C has from the very first been the sort of traditional shop that is just plain fun to visit and browse.
