The June meeting was attended by 17 members and guests, Vice-President Phil Harris in the chair as our president had not as yet completed the move of his coin & stamp shop to his new location. Our speaker for the evening was Const. Ingrid Thatcher of the R.C.M.P., Community Policing Liaison Officer for the Nanaimo area, who gave us instructions and tips on rendering our homes and possessions more burglar-proof. It was somewhat shocking to hear that there are those out there who must raise as much as $400 per day(!) through their illegal activities in order to feed their drug habit! And the problem is, well, .. everywhere! Items mentioned during the evening was a handout of advertisements for safes from Gallazin's for those who were interested. It was also determined that we should have a plaque for our meetingroom announcing that Mid-Island Coin Club does meet here. (1) The C.N.A. Convention will be held in Niagara Falls on July 20-23. This will be a huge affair and should be attended by any who can. This will be the last announcement before it happens. (2) In addition: don't forget the barbecue hosted by Mid-Island at the Parksville Community Park in ... Parksville on July 23 from 1 to 6 p.m. Hot dogs, pop and such will be provided but your own lawnchair is suggested (the ones there are concrete). This is open to all members of our and any other club as well as their families and guests. Good times include an informal bourse and so forth. (3) Mid-Island will again participate in the V.I.E.X. in late August at Beban Park, Nanaimo. We will be manning a table over the course of three days and Chairman Phil will be looking for volunteers to do so over the coming meeting or two. As usual, we will attempt 2-person teams on 4-hour shifts. We also require coins for giveaways to kids as well as back issues of Canadian Coin News and so forth. See Phil for full details. Please. * * * * * * Something slightly new for the "infotainment" session of our July meeting. Everyone knows something - big or small - about coins, notes, tokens, exonumia etc that few or no others do. In an "I'll Bet You Didn't Know ..." segment, how about sharing one of your tidbits of information and make the rest of us even better informed? Of great importance to MICC members - and just so it won't be overlooked later: the hours in Jeff's new store at 3150 North Island Highway (upstairs in the Lenhart Insurance building) are: Tuesday through Saturday inclusive, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
