MICCy Speaks:

The February meeting was held at the regular time and place with 24 members and guests in attendance. As a trial balloon, the donation auction held after the regular one was a success, the club coffers being enriched by a total $38.90. So the treasury is in good shape but it's good to know that this little fun-option is always in the wings. Maybe we'll hold another one later just for the fun of it.

For our viewing pleasure and educational edification, the V.C.R. tape “Emanuel Hahn” on loan from the C.N.A. Library was seen by the members and guests present.

In March, we are slated to have a speaker on the subject of Newfoundland coins and paper money, complete with display. Not to be missed.

Many members are unaware of the fact that each is entitled to a short entry in the Journal each month of items for sale, wantlists and the like. All you have to do is make your wishes known within a week or two of the last meeting so there is time to include it within the format of the next issue. Contact Jeff – or give Wayne a call at 245-2342.

With this in mind, your editor decided to carry a sort of “Dealers' Page” this month since we have three as members, all of whom are “Wayne-Approved”. While it's fun – and inexpensive – to collect from circulation finds and horsetrade with our friends, sooner or later (usually sooner) we have to come to rely on the professional services of a dealer if we are to form a meaningful collection. Yes, they have to make a living but the cost of their service is very, very low in comparison to the time and trouble they save us. And most have a real passion for coins; take it from me: most could probably make a better living doing a whole lot of other things. So when you find a good one, support them with your patronage. After all, you're not doing it for them; you're doing it for yourself. And how hard can that be?

M.I.C.C. Member #001. Any local collector who doesn't know Jeff and Joan's store in Rutherford Mall has probably been a coma. But for those who don't, Nanaimo S&C has from the very first been the sort of traditional shop that is just plain fun to visit and browse.

M.I.C.C. #027 – since 2003. George's is one of the more fun tables to browse at coin shows and conventions. He deals in Canadian and Newfoundland coins, pre-Confederation tokens, world coins and paper money, medals of all kinds – including military – as well as “odd and curious”.

Have a look at his site or e-mail your inquiries.

Also a researcher and writer for numerous coin publications: (see his article on William the Conqueror's sons' coins in a recent issue of Canadian Coin News).
