For coin clubs that take a summer hiatus, September is in many ways the start of a new year. Although M.I.C.C. doesn't take the break, there is nevertheless the very definite feeling of the turning of the seasons. Soon the gardening tools will be put away, the UV Index will mean little and the pursuit of numismatics just a little more appropriate somehow. If there is a start of the collecting year in September, ours will begin with the annual presentation of the Bill Potts Memorial Trophy to that member who, in the opinion of his or her peers, has most embodied the concept of "Steady Eddie" in our club during the past year. The ballots have been cast and counted but the results kept under wraps until the September meeting awarding. Better count on attending; it could be you. The "end of the year" was just as momentous with the third visit to our club of Les Copan, Regional Director of the Canadian Numismatic Association for B.C./Yukon. Aside from giving us a talk as to the very real benefits of joining the C.N.A. - hopefully with a couple of successes - Les was here to make a presentation to M.I.C.C. of the C.N.A. award of "Best Local Club Newsletter" of 2005. Your editor was aware of this ahead of time but kept it a secret for the club's happy surprise. But he was not aware of a second award to himself for Editor of the same newsletter. Sneaky pups in the C.N.A. - but thanks, guys. We also welcome back to the fold Tolling Jennings, partner and master of the Lasqueti Mint, who will deliver a talk on this subject at the September meeting. Additionally, in this issue, begins his three-part series on the overhaul of U.S. coin designs that took place during the first two decades of the 20th Century.
